Personal Contract Hire, or PCH, is a popular type of car leasing. It’s a type of rental agreement that secures a chosen car for a certain amount of time and an agreed-upon mileage limit. As PCH is a lease agreement, you will never own the car. But you will be the registered driver for the duration of your agreement, and at the end, you can hand it back and start a new lease with the latest model.
This type of leasing is ideal if you want to drive the latest cars every few years without having to worry about depreciation as you don’t own it.
Explore Personal Contract Hire below to learn about how it works, its benefits and who it’s best suited for. At Pentagon Group we have a team of SAF-accredited finance specialists who are here to guide you along your journey. So whether you have a question about how PCH works or want to choose your next car, get in touch with your local Pentagon Group in Lancashire, Lincolnshire, Derbyshire, Staffordshire, Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire, Cheshire, Merseyside, Leicestershire and West Yorkshire.
Personal Contract Hire is a form of car leasing, or long-term rental, where you put down an upfront cost and pay monthly to lease a car and hand it back at the end. You’ll never own the car with PCH, instead, you’re renting it.
What does PCH stand for?
PCH stands for:
PCH is a very simple process which is essentially a long-term car rental. You put down an initial payment (not a deposit) and then pay monthly rentals for the duration of your agreement.
Your agreement will last anywhere between 24 to 60 months and you’ll also have a mileage limit for the duration of your agreement.
Getting a car through PCH is ideal if you know you don’t want to keep the car after the term, and you want to drive the latest vehicles. It’s also perfect if you want to pay less overall, as PCH deals typically cost less than PCP finance when comparing the full terms.
Benefits of Personal Contract Hire
There are plenty of benefits when it comes to Personal Contract Hire. Read below to find out if PCH is the right way to fund your car.
You get to drive the very latest cars without any hassle. PCH deals typically cost less overall when compared to other finance types, so you can usually afford a better car with PCH when compared to PCP or HP.
So this means you get the keys to the newest models without having to deal with any of the upfront costs associated with buying a brand new car. And when your lease is up, you can hand the car back and start your next PCH deal with a brand new model.
Monthly payments are much lower when compared to other types of finance if you were getting the same car with the same length of the contract.
This means you can keep your costs lower or go for a more specced out car. The choice is yours!
A lot of deals have the option to have regular maintenance included as part of your monthly costs to make your life easier.
This covers all the servicing you’ll need during your PCH agreement, making your driving experience even more convenient.
You can see exactly how much you’ll need to pay for the duration of your agreement before you’ve even signed the deal.
This means you can budget accordingly and you’ll never be hit with any surprise costs. Your monthly payments are fully locked in for the length of your lease.
As you hand the car back at the end of the agreement, you don’t have to go through the hassle of reselling your car.
You simply hand it back and choose your next model, or close the deal and move on.
There are a few main points to consider when it comes to PCH deals. This includes:
You will have a mileage limit agreed for the full term of your PCH lease. If you exceed this limit, you will have to pay an extra fee based on how many miles you exceeded. This is typically 10p per extra mile but can be more or less.
Before you sign your agreement, make sure you fully understand the cost implications of your mileage limit. Sometimes it can be more cost-effective to pay for a higher mileage limit than it is to pay for exceeding the limit itself.
General wear and tear is accepted as part of your PCH deal. But if you don’t return your car in “good repair and condition” you may be charged for any damages that need to be set right like scratches, dents and more.
As you don’t own the car, you can’t add any modifications to it without explicit permission. If you wanted to add a tow bar or roof rails, you’d have to contact your leasing provider to ask for permission.
You’ll also need to get permission to take your PCH car abroad every time you go and there may be an associated charge.
The end of PCH is pretty simple. You hand the car back and the contract ends - that’s it. As long as you have kept within your mileage limit and returned your car in good condition, you won’t have anything extra to pay.
If you have breached your mileage allowance, you may have to pay per mile. And if you’ve damaged the car or kept it in bad condition, you may be charged for repairs.
Once everything is settled, you’re free to get your next vehicle on PCH. You can choose from a roster of the latest vehicles or walk away and end it there.
You can typically cancel a Personal Contract Hire agreement but you may still have to pay the remaining amount of rentals (depending on how far into the contract you are.) This is known as a PCH early termination. This may not be available on all leases so make sure to read your contract.
If you can no longer afford your lease, cancelling may not be the best option. Instead get in touch with the finance provider to see if you can increase the length of your agreement, which would then reduce your monthly payments.
However, there is a 14-day cooling-off period at the start of your contract where you can cancel without charge.
The cooling-off period for Personal Contract Hire agreements is typically a minimum of 14 days from entering the contract.
If you choose to cancel your PCH deal during the cooling-off period you won’t be charged. This usually applies to any sales made online, over the phone, by mail or anywhere not on the company’s premises. So if you go into the premises and sign the contract, you may not have the right to a cooling-off period.
You are typically refunded all payments including the processing fee. To cancel during the cooling-off period, just get in touch with your finance provider.
Does personal contract hire include insurance? Not usually, no. So you will be liable for ensuring you are fully insured on your PCH car. You will also most likely need to purchase fully comprehensive cover for your car too.
Whilst not necessary, it’s worth getting GAP insurance on your PCH car. GAP (Guaranteed Asset Protection) insurance covers you in the event of your lease car being written off or stolen so you won’t have to pay anything extra as your insurer covers the costs. Without GAP, you would have to pay for the remaining costs if your vehicle is written off or stolen.
