There are a few different types of hybrid cars available on the scheme. This includes self-charging hybrid, mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid and self-charging hybrid.
Full hybrid cars use both the traditional engine and electric motor to power the car, whether it’s at the same time or on their own. This means you can drive with just petrol or electric.
Self-charing is one of the most popular types of hybrid on the roads, using a smaller battery that’s charged by the engine.
Mild hybrid Motability cars work similarly to self-charging powertrains, but instead, the electric motor and engine can’t operate independently. This means the motor is used to help the engine at all times. Mild hybrids are a perfect stepping stone into electric vehicles.
Some newer models are made with mild-hybrid powertrains that don’t actually add power when driving - instead, they’re used to save fuel by recovering energy.
Motability plug-in hybrid cars are a step closer to a full electric vehicle. They have a battery that can be plugged in to charge, giving you much more electric-only miles when compared to other types of hybrid cars.
Electric-only ranges for plug-in hybrid cars are typically around 30-miles. This means if you regularly drive under 30 miles a day, you’ll be able to run your car without using petrol for daily commutes!
