Motability adaptations make your car more accessible. Whether you need something to help you drive, store your wheelchair or aid with entering and exiting your car, you’ll find the perfect adaptation for your Motability car.
Many adaptations are available at no extra cost to you with additional charitable grants available to fund your chosen installations. Read our handy Motability guide for more information on the scheme, or give us a call on 0330 390 6886 to talk to a friendly advisor.
There are loads of Motability adaptations available so everyone can find the perfect addition to get them on the road. Here at Pentagon, we work closely with you to help you through the process and get your adaptations fitted as conveniently as possible. We guide you through the following three steps:
First, you get in touch with a Motability car adaptation installer. You’ll discuss which adaptations you need, and they’ll advise on which cars are suitable for these changes. Contact us if you initially can’t find the adaptation you need as all of our dealerships have working relations with adaptation specialists, so we’ll help you get in touch with an installer. Most installers carry out all adaptations, but if you can’t find what you need, we’ll work with our network to sort something out for you.
Next, come to your local Pentagon dealership to find a car which matches your budget and is compatible with your adaptations. Our Motability specialists will guide you through your options, explaining everything you need to know about the process whilst helping you choose the ideal car for your needs.
Finally, after you’ve chosen your car and adaptations, we’ll complete the online order process with you. We’ll work with your chosen installer to make sure your Motability car is fitted with adaptations before you get it. We can even set up a session to show you how your adaptation works, something we offer when finalising the order.
With over 500 different car adaptations for disabled drivers, everyone will find something to get them on the road. The three main types are driving, wheelchair & scooter and accessibility Motability adaptations.
Driving adaptations help with driving, including speed control, steering and signalling. These vary from small additions to the car to completely replacing full systems with a bespoke adaptation.
Certain Motability driving adaptations keep all standard functions in place so other nominated drivers can use the car. When choosing your car, our specialists offer advice on which driving adaptations fit certain models.
Push/pull adaptations replace traditional foot pedals with a hand lever to make accelerating and braking easier. Pull the lever towards you to accelerate and push it away to brake. This requires an automatic gearbox.
Left foot accelerators are perfect for people with reduced mobility in their right leg. Floor-mounted accelerators sit on the left side of the brake with a guard over the original pedal. Or choose a twin-flip accelerator for an additional pedal on the left of the brake which can be folded away when not needed.
Electronic accelerators are designed for people who can’t use push/pull devices. These adaptations range from push and pull ring accelerators either behind or on top of the steering wheel to a trigger accelerator.
Other car adaptations for disabled drivers include general aids, like pedal extensions and an easy-release handbrake.
Signalling aids help with various functions, like indicators, windscreen wipers and headlights. Choose from remote-controlled devices and built-in indicator switches.
Steering aids make using the wheel much easier. Something like steering balls are essential if you have other hand controls fitted so you can steer and use the controls at the same time.
For scooters and larger wheelchairs, four-way hoists get items in and out of the boot with the press of a button. When loading, you still need to guide it by hand to make sure it fits perfectly. Most of the time, the rear seat will need to be folded away to store your wheelchair or scooter, something we’ll advise you on when browsing Motability cars.
Two-way hoists are designed to store lighter wheelchairs. Attach the wheelchair and press the button to either raise or lower it. You’ll still need to push it into the boot to secure it with tie-down straps. Rear seats might need to be part or fully folded so we’ll discuss your options when you’re choosing your car with Pentagon Motability.
Rooftop stowage stores items in a rooftop box so you can still use your boot space and rear seats. This fully automated storage solution is suited to lighter folding wheelchairs.
Access adaptations make it easier for drivers or passengers to get in and out, working as an alternative to Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles.
Transfer plates fit to the side of the car seat to help you move from wheelchair to car seat and back again, folding away when not needed. Choose from manual and electric plates for varying levels of assistance.
Electric person hoists add a permanent mount to the car with a frame and canvas seat. The sling attaches to the hoist, raising with the press of a button. Once inside the car, the canvas sling seat is still in place so it’s quick and easy to get out at the end of the journey.
Swivel seats rotate to make getting in and out much easier. Some even move all the way out of the car and lower down to wheelchair level, with manual and electric models available. Wheelchair swivel seats attach securely to the car and transfer onto a wheelchair base. Only some cars are compatible with swivel seats, so we’ll help you choose the ideal car for a swivel seat.
If you can’t cover the cost of your adaptations, you may be eligible for a charitable grant from the Motability Scheme. This can be used for driving lessons, to pay for the vehicle advance payment or to get Motability adaptations for your car. Make sure you go through the official Motability Scheme when getting an adaptation for the best price possible.
Free Motability car adaptations include some:
Some car adaptations for disabled drivers can be transferred from your previous model to a new Motability car at a drastically reduced price, with some transfers being completely free!
If you’re planning on transferring installations, we’ll work with the installers to choose transfer kits when setting up your adaptations. Driving adaptations can’t be transferred, but most access and storage can be. We’ll point out any adaptations that can be transferred.
