The introduction of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto allows the majority of drivers to stay connected when they’re on the move. So, what exactly is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; how does it work and which Ford cars is it available on?
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connects a car to the driver’s smartphone and allows it to be operated from the infotainment display, with an operating system that mirrors what’s on their phone. This allows the driver to answer calls, text messages and use many apps like satellite navigation without taking their eyes off the road.
From September 2018 Apple CarPlay is upgrading to IOS 12; this update will allow users to use Google Maps as well as Apple Maps. This app is extremely popular for many drivers as it is a great alternative to built-in satellite navigation (which is usually only available as an additional extra).
Your iTunes account can be accessed through CarPlay, which will allow you to listen to your favourite album, playlist or even music from your Apple Music subscription. What’s more, these can all be opened using Siri, so there is no reason to take your eyes off the road.
One of the most popular ways people stay connected is through phone calls and text messages. Siri lets you reply and send text messages as well as read your incoming messages aloud through the car’s speaker system. Calls can also be made or taken by either using Siri or by pressing a button on the touchscreen or driver’s steering wheel controls.
Like with CarPlay, Android users can take phone calls and send text messages using the Android system with drivers able to use Google’s own voice recognition software in order to send a message without having to take their eyes off the road ahead.
There are various music apps that can be used with Android Auto such as Amazon Music, Spotify, Wave and YouTube Music. These can all be accessed through the car’s in-built touchscreen for easy access to a near-unlimited choice of music.
Android Auto users can enjoy using Google Maps to help reach their destination with live traffic updates. Therefore, drivers will not need to look out for a separate in-built satellite navigation system (which is often an additional extra).
