Vauxhall Adam S Arrives At Pentagon Showrooms
Vauxhall's Adam range has been given a high-performance overhaul following the arrival of the all-new Adam S. This incredibly stylish hatch has been designed to offer more power and comes equipped with a 1.4-litre turbo engine supplying 148bhp, along with a specially-tuned chassis and Vauxhall's VXR braking system. Following its debut at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, the Vauxhall Adam S has made its way to Pentagon Vauxhall's showrooms. The Adam range has already taken the city hatch market by storm following the model's introduction in 2013. In the two years since its launch, more than 125,000 units have been sold across Europe, of which 22,000 have gone to homes in the UK. What's more, the popularity of the Adam seems to show no signs of slowing, with figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Trader showing a 72 per cent increase in sales last year. The organisation's figures also showed that 90 per cent of Adams have found their way onto the driveways of private buyers.
Muscular exterior design
The all-new Adam S comes with an agile and muscular appearance, more than hinting at the power and performance that lies beneath the bonnet. Various changes have been made to give this Adam more presence on the road, including a front lip spoiler, side sill mouldings and a new-look exhaust. Red brake callipers also add to the model's sporty feel.
Immediately obvious are the new 18-inch wheels, the distinctive rear spoiler that sits above the rear window and LED daytime running lights that form the signature 'wing' shape. LED technology is also in use across the car's taillights. Customers will be spoilt for choice when it comes to personalisation options. There are ten colour schemes to choose from, as well as four roof combinations. In addition, Vauxhall's Red 'n' Roll roof design has been reserved specifically for S drivers.
Sporty cabin
The updated styling that has taken place on the exterior of the S has been carried through into the cabin. Red stitch detailing, racing décor on the instrument panel and special door entry strips all help to add to the bold and sporty feel of the car. An optional leather package is available, along with the manufacturer's multi-colour LED interior lighting package.
Innovative technology is in evidence throughout the interior of the vehicle. The impressive IntelliLink system from Vauxhall is available as an option across the Adam range and offers an incredible level of connectivity via smartphones and tablet devices. The infotainment system is compatible with Android and Apple iOS devices and comes complete with USB and Bluetooth connectivity, an audio streaming feature, a total of seven speakers designed to provide a truly immersive experience, plus a 7" colour touchscreen.
The car comes equipped with a wide range of features fitted as standard, including aluminium sports pedals and dark-tinted rear windows. Electronic climate control helps to maintain a comfortable environment on longer drives, while the steering wheel mounted audio controls help to ensure you can create the mood you want while moving, without taking your eyes off the tarmac. The S also comes with a range of safety features fitted as standard, including ABS, an Electronic Stability Program and tyre pressure monitoring system, and a six airbag safety system.
Power and performance
As the range-topping variant, the Adam S has plenty in its corner when it comes to raw power and performance. The model comes with a new 1.4-litre turbocharged powertrain, offering 148bhp and maximum torque of 220Nm. It's capable of achieving a top speed of 124mph and reaching 62mph from a standing start in just 8.5 seconds, before pushing on to reach a top speed of 124mph. Thanks to exceptional mid-range torque the model really comes into its own on winding country lanes, while the six-speed transmission and short-throw shifter has been designed to ensure the driver can get the most out of the available performance.
The increased performance of the S has necessitated a number of changes to Adam's chassis too. The car's springs, dampers and compound crank rear axle have been changed, and the driver will have the option of manually turning off the car's Electronic Stability Program quickly and easily via the touch of a button.
Just as the car's performance has been upgraded, so too has its braking system. The S features a setup lifted from the previous generation Corsa VXR and comes equipped with a pair of 308mm ventilated discs at the front of the car and 264mm discs at the rear.
Efficiency
While the S has more power under the bonnet, Vauxhall has not taken its eye off the ball when it comes to efficiency. The car comes complete with Start/Stop technology to reduce emissions and various adjustments have been made to reduce weight across the vehicle. As a result, the new Adam is capable of achieving 47.8mpg and keeping emissions as low as 139g/km. The model is Euro 6 compliant.
