Freedom of the Convertible

Summer is coming, the sun is shining and the open road beckons. There’s a simple thrill in driving a convertible unlike any other kind of driving experience. Cruising around town, along a quiet country road or swooping up and down a high pass in a convertible gives you a feeling of freedom you don’t get with any other kind of car. There’s a great range on the market and with a convertible, even the daily commute to work can be a whole lot more enjoyable.

  • Fiat 500 1.2

Small is beautiful with this 1.2 Pop two door convertible which comes in a great choice of colours, and has that unmistakable Italian styling. Suitable for the young-at-heart, the Fiat 500 has a manual 5 Speed gearbox and will give you a combined fuel economy of an impressive 58.9 mile to the gallon or an even more with the Twinair S models.

Standard equipment with the Fiat 500 includes electric front windows, body colour bumpers, six speakers and MP3 compatible radio/single CD player, driver and passenger air-bag as well as driver knee bag. This is a great little car for inner-city driving with that added touch of flair which you get with the soft, open top.

All models come with the full three year/60,000 Fiat warranty, so you’re covered for plenty of driving with the roof down. This is a real little charmer from the renowned Italian manufaturer and prices start from just over £13k, up to £14.7k for the Twinair S model. The Twinair has auto climate control, leather steering wheel and is kitted out with bluetooth and USB.

    Peugeot 207

This super slick Peugeot 207 1.6 Vti Roland Garros two door convertible will turn a few heads out on the open road or cruising around town. A great looker from Peugeot and destined to be a popular choice among cabriolet enthusiasts.

Packed with many attractive features that come as standard, the 207 has a series of styling improvements, to make it an appealing choice in what has become an increasingly competitive sector. The 207 handles superbly and will give you 43.5 miles to the gallon from its 120 BHP petrol engine and comes with Peugeot’s three year/60,000 mile warranty. Available in a wide choice of colours, the 207 does 0-62mph in 10.7 seconds. Prices start from just under £15k.

    Peugeot 308

The 308 1.6 E-hdi 115 Active is the diesel stable-mate of the 207 and comes standard with sat-nav, sports seats and 17 inch Stratus alloy wheels, to name just a few of a stunning range of features.

Add sophisticated lines and a thrifty 76.3 miles to the gallon and the 308 will be a popular choice for those who want to combine looks, convertible appeal, exciting driving experience and all-round economy. A real match-winner this one, the 308 offers sharp and precise handling and a beautiful interior.

    Citroen DS3

Another small convertible packed with style and a well-appointed interior. The two door 1.6 Vti Dstyle is no slouch and is a joy to drive, with a combined fuel economy of 49.6 miles to the gallon. This model is available in petrol or diesel option, with the DS3 1.6 E-hdi Airdream Dstyle doing 78.5 miles to the gallon, so no excuse for not cruising about the neighbourhood and impressing everyone!

The folding soft top provides plenty of scope to enjoy the elements and with the roof open all the way, you definitely get the authentic cabriolet experience. Should the weather change all of a sudden, simply press the button on the console above your head and the roof seals you in again in only 16 seconds. Rain? No problem.

Choose from the 5 speed manual gearbox models, in a wide range of colours, with prices starting at £17.5k and £17.8k for the diesel model. The automatic version is priced at just over £18.6k. For the more sporty out there, the Dsport convertible goes from 0-62mph in 8.2 seconds, has a manual 6 speed gearbox and is priced at just over £19.6 k. Definitely worth booking a test drive in any one of these Citroën’s which all come with a 3 year/60,000 mile warranty.

    Vauxhall Cascada

Vauxhall aren’t messing around with a range of nine models to choose from in their convertible range. The Cascada is a real looker, no two ways about it, and outdoes many other two door convertibles for that often overlooked aspect, rear seat flexibility. Access to the back seats is easy and comes with a 50:50 split option, controlled electrically.

With the top down all the way, the Cascada is a sleek beast with a clean profile and handling is first class. This is no doubt aided by chassis control capability, which automatically adjusts to road conditions and driving feedback. Prices for the 1.4t SE petrol model start at around £24k and, as well as a comprehensive list of features as standard, there are options for innovative extras, such as adaptive lighting functions, front camera system which recognises traffic signs and a warning for when you’re departing a lane. Another excellent safety feature is a collision warning system.

The 1.4 comes with 6 speed gearbox. Other models in the Cascada range come with a choice of 1.6 or 2.0 litre engines, in a range of stunning colours and finishes, and all with Vauxhall’s reassuring lifetime/100,000 mile warranty.

    Nissan 370Z

The 3.7 V6 GT 2dr is pure driving pleasure and that is what a lot of buyers of convertibles want. There are many great features, including a top 6 speed gearbox, electrically controlled hood and independent suspension, 18 inch alloy wheels, sports seats, but it’s the ride that will stay with you. Stiff, crisp, sharp, the 370Z is all of those.

There’s an upgrade, the GT Pack, which has even more features, including black leather and suede seats, Bose 8 speaker system, 19 inch alloys as well as cruise control. You can also opt for sat-nav and a 7 speed, semi-auto gearbox. Prices start at around £35k for the manual model and £37k for automatic, both petrol engines.
