R.S. cars are sporty iterations of standard Renault models with specially crafted engines and trackworthy performance. They’re considered separate models to their standard counterparts e.g. the Megane R.S. and the Megane.

R.S. Line is a trim level available on Renault cars. Rather than having extra engine power, sporty handling or special designs, R.S. Line cars are fully kitted out.

What does Renault R.S. stand for?

R.S. stands for Renault Sport.

Renault Sport is the performance car division of Renault which makes all the R.S. badged cars. The same abbreviation is true for R.S. Line models, with ‘Line’ showing it’s a trim level.

Renault Sport was formed back in 1976 as a merger between Reault-owned Alpine and Gordini competition divisions (Alpine is now back producing its own range of road cars.)

Ever since its inception, Renault Sport has produced track worthy cars. The first ever creation was the Renault Sport Spider back in 1995 - a roofless sports car exclusive to Renault Sport. With only one other version of the Spider releasing in 1997, Renault Sport moved onto making athletic versions of standard Renault models.

The first shared model graced by Renault Sport’s touch was the second generation Clio, arguably one of the most recognisable hatches of the late 90s & early 00s. This was the Clio Renaultsport 172 with a 2.0-litre engine with 168hp, and a subsequent 172 Cup model with stiffer suspension and less weight.

In 2003 the Megane Renaultsport 225 was launched with a 2.0-litre 222hp engine. And since then, there has been release after release until the modern Renault Megane R.S. 300.

The only other Renault model to receive R.S. treatment is the Twingo Renaultsport 133, acting as a more affordable entry to Renault hot hatches.

Will there be a new Clio R.S.?

The fourth-generation Clio was the last model to get the R.S. treatment. There isn’t a hot-hatch Clio in the works at the moment either as the focus has moved from the Clio to Alpine.
