Get Your Car Ready For The Winter Months With A £9.99 Winter Safety Check

You've probably switched the heating on at home, started wearing your thicker jumpers, and decided that evenings spent inside in the warm are far more preferable to going outside.

  • Making sure that your car is also ready for the winter months ahead is something you might normally decide to put off until you start wiping the early morning frost off the windscreen, but be advised that it's far better to be prepared ahead of time. Every year the unpredictable British weather catches drivers out, so it makes sense to do everything possible to ensure that's not you. Driving in poor weather conditions is never much fun, but it's infinitely better to do so securely in the knowledge that your vehicle is up to the task.

The good news is that preparing your vehicle for the colder months is reassuringly straightforward and the team here at Pentagon are more than happy to lend a hand. Don't wait until you think there might be an issue with your car's battery, or until you get worried that there's not enough tread left on your tyres to be able to drive safely through heavy rain.

    What's Involved?

Also sometimes referred to as a VHC (Vehicle Health Check), our Winter Safety Check will identify any current or potential future issues with your car. It involves one of Pentagon's technicians carrying out a visual inspection of your vehicle to pick up on any faults or areas of concern. Specifically, we'll run a 28-point check, looking at the vital parts of your vehicle including the wheels, exhaust, wiper blades, brakes, and steering. The car's key fluids (engine oil, screenwash, brake fluid, and radiator coolant) are also inspected to ensure they are within the correct range. If not, we'll top them up free of charge (up to a maximum of half a litre). Mandatory external lights and the horn will be tested, along with the car's seatbelts. The condition of the battery will also be inspected, while underside checks will look for evidence of oil leaks, potential issues with the exhaust system and include a check on tyre pressures and tread.

    Easy-To-Understand Traffic Light System

To make the safety check as useful as possible, after it is completed you'll be handed an easy-to-read report that provides details on everything checked during the inspection. For complete ease we have developed a traffic light system, so you'll quickly be able to recognise if any parts of the vehicle require attention. Items marked in red need to be addressed as a matter of urgency as they're potentially dangerous, and we'll usually recommend that these items be replaced or repaired immediately.

Although items highlighted in amber are not as urgent, they will likely require attention at some point in the future. Choosing to have such issues addressed now could well provide peace of mind while you're behind the wheel. Finally, green items have passed Pentagon's visual inspection and no work is deemed necessary.

Why Is A Safety Check So Important?

Your car may be well within its MOT period but that doesn't mean you can forget about maintenance issues altogether. During the winter months, the conditions on the road become more challenging and you'll likely have to face everything from heavy rain through to icy conditions and poor visibility regularly. Are you confident that your vehicle is as safe as it could be? Is your car equipped to handle whatever the British weather throws at it?

Poor visibility is a major cause of accidents and if one or more of your bulbs has gone then you'll be putting your own safety at risk, as well as the safety of other road users. Likewise, it's imperative to have enough windscreen washer in your vehicle's reservoir to allow you to clean the windscreen properly in poor conditions. During winter, gritted roads can lead to your windscreen being covered in salt. If you're unable to clean it immediately, your view is likely to be impaired. Bad weather isn't the only time a dirty windscreen could land you in trouble. The low winter sun causes all sorts of problems when it comes to visibility, especially if your windscreen isn't clean to start with. It's also important to remember that during the colder months, you'll need an additive in your washer fluid bottle to stop the water from freezing solid when the mercury dips below zero.

Your vehicle's tyres are always an important area to focus on, primarily because they're your only point of contact with the road. Book a Winter Safety Check at Pentagon and our technicians will carry out a visual inspection of your wheels and tyres before testing the tread and pressure of each one. Even if you get a green light, it's important to remember that tyre pressures should be tested weekly to ensure they stay at the correct pressure. Keep an eye out for bulges, tears, and cuts too as these are likely to impact the effectiveness of a tyre.
