New Citroen C4 Cactus Arrives At Pentagon
It was always anticipated that the new Citröen C4 Cactus would cause quite a stir when it arrived on the scene in the UK and this latest model from the French manufacturer has not disappointed. Bold and distinctive looks mark the C4 Cactus out as a serious player in the crossover segment. The car boasts striking exterior styling, a semi-raised ride height, split front lights and the very latest technology including a 7" Touch Drive interface.
Perhaps most impressive of all is Citröen's innovative Airbump technology, designed to minimise the impact of small scuffs and dings, protecting the vehicle's overall aesthetics.
Practical functionality is at the heart of the C4 Cactus, its flowing lines and curves resulting in sleek exterior styling from every angle. The wide, bold front end comes with high-tech split headlights and LED daytime running lights, while the floating roof design features stylish and practical roof bars. One of the most noticeable and interesting new external features comes in the form of Citröen's Airbump panels. Situated on the sides of the vehicle as well as on the front and rear bumpers, the technology is designed to protect the C4 Cactus from everyday dings and scrapes.
Tiny air capsules are trapped within the thermoplastic polyurethane material, and these absorb low-speed impacts and avoid unnecessary spending on repair bills.
A total of three trim levels are available from launch – the Flair, Feel and Touch. The exterior dimensions of the C4 Cactus, at 4.16m long with a wheelbase of 2.60m, ensure it remains agile and compact, while clever use of interior space makes for a highly-practical and versatile machine. The manufacturer has opted for an uncluttered look and stuck with the idea of creating a sleek vehicle inside and out. The C4 Cactus' dashboard is slim and packed with technology, such as the 7" Touch Drive interface. The screen, which comes fitted as standard across the range, provides access to all of the C4 Cactus' controls and makes accessing everything from entertainment to climate control options a breeze. Smartphone connectivity, music, navigation aids, automatic air conditioning and driver aids such as Park Assist can all be accessed through the system.
Storage space is considerable inside the cabin, thanks in part to the placement of the passenger airbag in the roof space – a move that has helped create an 8.5-litre glovebox, accessible from the top of the dashboard. There is plenty of room for personal belongings in the boot too, thanks to the 358-litre luggage space. The cabin is enjoyable even on the longest journeys, with sofa-style seats helping to keep everyone comfortable.
The range features four petrol engines and two diesel powertrains. Owners will get to benefit from either PureTech petrol or BlueHDi diesel technology, aimed at lowering fuel consumption and CO? emissions. The PureTech VTi is a naturally aspirated three-cylinder, 1.2-litre engine offering 82bhp, while the BlueHDi 100 powertrain is capable of keeping CO2 emissions to just 82g/km, while achieving up to 91.1mpg combined, making the Cactus much better for the environment and your wallet.
The design of the vehicle also helps to keep running costs to a minimum. The Cactus C4 features a compact, lightweight platform, along with an aluminium bonnet and pop-out windows at the back of the vehicle. The panoramic sunroof comes with heat protection technology to prevent the cabin from getting too hot on sunny days and there is also a magic wash wiper system that helps to promote efficiency. According to Citröen, the model's overall running costs are close to a fifth lower than the benchmark vehicles currently found in the compact hatchback segment.
Safety is of course integral to the design of the new Citröen C4 Cactus. Alongside the revolutionary Airbag in Roof technology, the car offers Park Assist and a colour reversing camera that can be viewed using the vehicle's touch screen. Hill Start Assist is there to steady the car for a period of two seconds once the brake has been released on gradients of more than 3 per cent. In addition, static cornering lights providing an extra beam that shines on the inside of bends to improve all-round visibility are available as an optional extra on the Feel trim and come as standard with the Flair. Electronic Stability Control is present across all three trim levels, along with ABS, cruise control with speed limiter, a tyre pressure monitor and two ISOFIX mounting points in the rear of the car.
Personalisation is simple with the new C4 Cactus thanks to the huge number of options available. Flat, metallic and pearlescent paint options can be bought separately, as can various add-on packs including a City Camera Pack and a Navigation and Hi-Fi Pack. Owners can choose to upgrade the interior of their vehicle thanks to the availability of various upgrade packs, including the Habana Leather and Cloth Highlight pack and a Black Leather and Cloth Purple Highlight pack.
The new Citröen C4 Cactus will take pride of place on the manufacturer's display stand at this year's Paris Motor Show, due to start on October 4. According to Citröen, the company is "laying the foundations of a new automotive order" by producing a real alternative to C-segment compact hatches.
