Motability for over 65s: am I still eligible?

For people over the age of 65, there is sometimes confusion about whether you can still enjoy the benefits of the Motability Scheme. But, in some circumstances, you can!

  • To lease a car or continue leasing through the Motability Scheme over the age of 65, you must have at least 12 months left on any eligible allowance.

Below we look at Motability Scheme eligibility over the age of 65 and other factors that may affect your claim status.

  • Motability for over 65s

The Motability Scheme criteria is the same for applicants over 65 as it is for applicants under 65. To qualify for a motability lease car, an individual will currently receive an eligible allowance. Plus, you need to have at least 12 months left on your allowance award.

To claim Motability for over 65s, you must receive at least one of the below allowances:

The Enhanced Rate of the mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)

    £62.55 a week*

The Higher Rate mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA)

    £62.55 a week*

The Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)

    £62.55 a week*

The War Pensioners’ mobility Supplement (WPMS)

    £69.85 a week*

*Current weekly allowance figures (subject to change)

  • Motability allowance age limits

The current age limit for claiming the above allowances for the first time through the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is 64.

This can cause confusion with claiming through the Motability Scheme. However, if you are over the age of 65 with 12 months left on any of the above allowances, you can exchange this value or part pay the lease of a motability car at Pentagon.

Unfortunately, you can’t apply for eligible allowances once you reach 65 years or older.

  • Other considerations for Motability over 65

Individuals over the age of 65 with additional care requirements such as mental or physical disabilities may nominate someone as a named driver on the lease. This is suitable for care home residents that will still benefit from the vehicle, so they enjoy the freedom the Motability Scheme brings.

Care home residents can still claim a Motability car, as long as they’re still fully benefiting from having the vehicle.

Motability lease cars can also be adapted for any additional driving needs. For example, specialist adaptations, improved accessibility, and stowage modifications can be implemented to make the driving experience suitable for the individual.
