How To Take Home A Motability Car With Personal Independent Payments (PIPs)

Following the launch of the Motability scheme in 1977, it has become much easier for disabled people across the UK to enjoy the same kind of freedom that most able-bodied drivers take for granted.

  • The scheme allows people in receipt of the higher or enhanced rate of the mobility allowance to lease a car, scooter or a powered wheelchair. Up to two named drivers are also allowed to drive the leased vehicle – people typically choose family members or carers.

Thanks to Motability, millions of disabled people are able to enjoy a new-found sense of freedom. The fact that many of the world's leading car manufacturers have signed up to the scheme means there's also a huge range of vehicles to choose from. Models from top brand names such as Vauxhall, Fiat, Nissan and Citroën can be leased through Pentagon Group. If you're interested in a small nimble fuel efficient car that's ideal for city driving, or perhaps a roomier people carrier with more space, a member of our friendly and knowledgeable Motability team will be able to help.

    Personal Independent Payments

In 2013 the government began the process of creating a new system of disability benefits, replacing the Disability Living Allowance (DLA) with Personal Independence Payments (PIPs) for people aged between 16 and 64. The changeover won't be complete until 2018, but even disabled people who have been given an indefinite or lifetime award will be switched across to the new system.

Only claimants who were aged 65 and over on April 8, 2013 will avoid moving to PIPs. Disabled children will continue to receive DLA until they are 16 years old.

Does receiving PIPs make me eligible for a Motability car?

PIPs come in two parts, a daily living component and a mobility component. You'll receive either the standard or enhanced rate, but only people who qualify for the higher payment are eligible to join the Motability scheme.

It's important to note that PIPs represent a new type of support and therefore not everyone who met the criteria for receiving the higher or enhanced rate of mobility allowance under the old DLA scheme will be eligible to receive the higher rate of benefit under the new system. Rates are assessed on a regular basis to ensure that people are receiving the correct level of financial support based on their circumstances.

I qualify for the enhanced rate – what now?

Using your higher rate of PIP to join the Motability scheme is quick and easy with the help of Pentagon. First of all you'll want to book an appointment with a member of our team to find out exactly what is involved, from the range of Motability vehicles you'll be able to choose from, to how servicing and maintenance works.

The great news is that leasing a vehicle through Motability from Pentagon means you won't need to worry about a thing. By exchanging all or part of your PIP you'll receive a new vehicle plus a 60,000-mile allowance every three years. Comprehensive insurance is included too, along with replacement tyres, windows and windscreens when required, car breakdown cover provided by the RAC, plus servicing and maintenance.

    Are there any hidden costs?

The Motability scheme has been designed to offer disabled people a convenient and affordable way to get mobile. You can rest easy knowing that there are no hidden costs associated with leasing a vehicle through the Pentagon. There are hundreds of cars available that can be leased using the PIP alone. Drivers who want a vehicle with higher specifications can however choose to make an advance payment. It all depends on what type of model you're interested in driving. Our team will be able to provide advice and guidance to make the decision easier.

It's also worth noting that PIPs payments will often cover the cost of having a vehicle adapted so it meets your personal needs. Many thousands of people who join the Motability scheme do just that. You might require a wheelchair stowage system to be fitted to the car, or for the vehicle's pedals to be modified. Swivel seats and hoists can be installed to make entering and exiting the car simpler, while steering aids can be fitted to make driving easier. To find out more, get in touch and ask for a copy of our Make it Yours brochure – a complete guide to adaptions.

What support can I expect from Pentagon?

Rest assured that our fully trained staff will support you all the way, from selecting a vehicle to completing the paperwork on your behalf. We offer a personal service by appointment to make sure you understand how the Motability scheme works and we'll even come and pick you up and bring you to your nearest dealership if you need a hand reaching us.

Choosing the right vehicle to suit your needs is of course vital. We'll accompany you on a test drive to offer that extra reassurance, and you'll be free to try as many different cars as you want until you find something that suits your individual needs. If you don't drive, and the vehicle will be used by a family member or a carer, a member of the Pentagon team will be more than happy to provide a chauffeured test drive.

Our support doesn't end once you've driven away. For example, we offer the same pick-up and return service when your vehicle needs its annual service. In addition, a member of the Motability team will always be on hand to supply advice and answer any questions you may have.
