Triple Win for Renault at Top Gear Awards

Groupe Renault picked up awards for "Manufacturer of the Year", "City Car of the Year" and "Performance Car of the Year"

  • GROUPE RENAULT NAMED 'MANUFACTURER OF THE YEAR'

Groupe Renault has been named Manufacturer of the Year at TopGear.com annual awards ceremony. The accolade recognises the achievements of Renault, Dacia and Alpine over the past 12 months. At the same event the Mégane R.S. Trophy-R collected the Performance Car of the Year award, while New ZOE was handed City Car of the Year.

TopGear.com reflected on what made Groupe Renault this year’s winner: “It’s the variety that’s key to Renault’s ascension to TG award-winning excellence. Its mainstream cars are fine, but give it a brief to nail, a set of very specific parameters to fulfil, and it chases perfection quite unlike any other car manufacturer.”

Commenting on the coveted award, Vincent Tourette, Managing Director Groupe Renault UK: “We are delighted to receive this award from TopGear.com. 2019 has been a fantastic year for Groupe Renault, with the launch of the All-New Renault Captur, New Renault ZOE and the All-New Renault Clio, the latter continuing a 30-year success story for the brand. Dacia continues to go from strength-to-strength and was one of the few manufacturers to post increased sales figures this year. Meanwhile the rebirth of Alpine has gained further momentum with the exciting introduction of the new A110S. But we don’t stop here, 2020 is looking even more exciting!”

In 2019 Groupe Renault has launched seven new models in total, with All-New Clio, All-New Captur, New ZOE and New Koleos, plus New Trafic and New Master commercial vehicles.

Alpine has added the A110S to its line-up, the new model features a more powerful engine as well as lowered and stiffened suspension for an even more focused driving experience, whilst maintaining everyday drivability.

Finally, Dacia has enjoyed sales success in 2019, despite the continuing challenges of the new car market. Year to date (up to October 2019) Dacia enjoyed a 38.1% increase in sales over the same period in 2018, with the robust Duster SUV from £10,995 not only impressing TopGear.com  judges but also British buyers.

  • RENAULT ZOE IS NAMED 'CITY CAR OF THE YEAR'

The New Renault ZOE also won the City Car of the Year trophy at TopGear.com annual awards ceremony. Leading the charge against a vast number of talented rivals, the New ZOE impressed TopGear judges with its impressive range, performance, and confident character.

Reflecting on the New ZOE’s success TopGear.com said: “Renault could have gone back to the drawing board and tried to rewrite the formula. But it didn’t – instead of an all-new ZOE, it’s simply revised the existing one. Chamfered the edges, fixed only what needed fixing and left the rest. Confident in its product. It’s even quite good fun”.

Gilles Normand, Senior Vice President Mobility Services and Electric Vehicles Division commented: “We are delighted that TopGear.com has named New Renault ZOE its City Car of the Year. This award is recognition of Renault’s pioneering commitment to affordable electric mobility, with New ZOE’s exceptional range, unique driving pleasure, low running costs and extensive use of recycled materials key to its success.”

Capable of running up to 245 miles (WLTP) on a single charge, New ZOE features the longest range in its segment. Using a new 52kWh battery and available with optional 50kW DC fast charging, New ZOE can add up to 90 miles of range in just 30 minutes. All models are available with a free fully-installed 7kWh fast charging home wallbox.

Externally, New ZOE has been redesigned to give an even more modern look, plus now features standard LED headlamps. On the inside there’s a fresh dashboard design complete with customisable 10-inch TFT instrument cluster and the option of a Renault EASY LINK 9.3-inch portrait style infotainment screen, while on Iconic models the seat trim is made from 100% recycled materials, predominantly old plastic bottles and waste seat belt material. Wireless smartphone charging is also available, while all versions get a comprehensive suite of safety systems, including an Active Emergency Braking System (AEBS) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW).

Under the skin is a choice of powerful R135 100 kW or R110 80 kW motors, both of which feature a smooth, single-speed automatic transmission with new B-mode function that intensifies the regenerative braking effect to deliver true one pedal driving characteristics.

Play, Iconic and GT-Line trim levels are all available, with prices starting at £25,670 on the road after the Plug In Car Grant (£3,500).

  • RENAULT MEGANE TROPHY-R SCOOPS COVETED TOPGEAR.COM 'PERFORMANCE CAR OF THE YEAR' AWARD

The Renault Mégane R.S. Trophy-R has been crowned TopGear.com Performance Car of the Year too, beating 2019’s most potent sports and supercars to the title. This success follows the Mégane’s impressive showing at TopGear Magazine’s TG24 performance car test, as well as setting lap records at the fearsome Nürburgring circuit in Germany, the extremely fast Spa Francorchamps track in Belgium, and Suzuka in Japan.

During the intense 24-hour test at the Portimao circuit in Portugal, the TG24 performance car contest brought together 15 of the year’s most exciting road, race and rally cars. At the end of this marathon assessment TopGear’s team of testers placed the Renault Mégane Trophy-R in first place, ahead of models such as the McLaren 720S Track Pack, Porsche Cayman GT4 and Mercedes-AMG A45.

TopGear.com summed up the Renault’s victory: “Fitted with a dizzying array of exotic components – from CF wheels to ceramic brakes – our Performance Car of the Year is unlike any other hot hatch.”

“It takes guts to ask Porsche money for a family hatch, even if said family hatch has had an unprecedented amount of effort lavished upon it in pursuit of speed and lightness.”

Patrice Ratti, Managing Director of Renault Sport Cars commented: “We’re thrilled that the Mégane R.S. Trophy-R has been awarded the Performance Car of the Year accolade by TopGear.com. This achievement recognises the hard work of our talented Renault Sport team in creating a car that delivers motorsport focus to the road. With its lap records at famous circuits around the world, including the production car front wheel drive record at the Nürburgring, the exceptional Mégane continues to add to trophy cabinet”.

Limited to just 500 units globally, and with only 32 right-hand drive examples coming to the UK, the Renault Mégane R.S. Trophy-R is the ultimate expression of Renault Sport’s decades of hot hatch expertise. Featuring bespoke aerodynamics and lightweight carbon composite body panels, the high-performance hatchback is 130kg lighter than a Mégane R.S. Trophy 300. It is also the first car in its class to be available with powerful Brembo carbon ceramic brakes and Carbon Revolution carbon fibre wheels.

Powered by a 300PS turbocharged 1.8-litre engine with a six-speed manual gearbox, all versions of the Mégane R.S. Trophy-R feature an Akrapovi? exhaust system, Brembo brakes, Öhlins dampers, Sabelt lightweight bucket seats and Bridgestone Potenza S007 tyres developed specifically for Renault Sport. The suspension is also totally revised with unique geometry and a lightweight ‘H’ pattern rear axle.

Externally the Trophy-R is identified by its unique mother-of-pearl paint finish and red highlights as well as carbon composite bonnet, carbon rear diffuser and standard Fuji Light 19’-inch alloy wheels painted red. Inside, there’s an Alcantara trimmed steering wheel, while the rear seat has been removed to save weight. Elsewhere, the 7-inch R-LINK 2 infotainment features R.S. Monitor, which allows in-depth access to performance data and telemetry.

Just 500 examples of the Megane R.S. Trophy-R will be built, of which 32 will be right-hand drive examples for the U.K. Prices start at £51,140 OTR, the vehicle is on sale now and available to order from the Renault dealer network.
