The Subaru Forester offers brilliant all-weather ability and is now no longer the fuel hog it once was. Andy Enright takes a look at this rehabilitated all-rounder.

SUBARU FORESTER ESTATE 2.0 X 5DR

As a halfway house between an all-wheel drive estate car and a 'proper' SUV, the Subaru Forester runs the risk of falling between two stools. In reality, it's a crossover in the best sense of the word, standing comparison with the talent in both genres. If you're looking for something different, which teams all-conditions practicality with behind-the-wheel fun, there's little to touch it.

Anybody that drove the old first or second generation Subaru Foresters will remember the apparent contradiction of its boxy styling and up-and-at-'em exuberance. It wasn't much to look at, the Lego brick styling appearing faintly ridiculous with the accompaniment of a lairy bonnet scoop and five spoke alloy wheels. Neither was it a paragon of dynamic composure. But the way it would grip and, in turbo form, accelerate out of corners was so manic that it could reduce most drivers to a fit of the giggles. Unfortunately it drank fuel at a terrifying rate, wasn't nearly big enough or plush enough to suit most British buyers and there was no diesel engine offered.

In 2008 the Forester changed tack and set about growing up. Its styling morphed into a more conventional take on the compact SUV and with the introduction of an excellent boxer diesel engine, it was rather more fit for polite society than its slightly unhinged predecessors. The latest model continues the theme with styling revisions and a more refined and efficient petrol engine.

Although the Forester has matured, it hasn't forgotten how to entertain. The ride is sportier than the slightly frumpy styling might suggest and the new 2.0-litre petrol engine is a classy piece of kit. The designers have concentrated on improving economy and reducing emissions, so while power has remained roughly the same, there is more torque and it arrives sooner, which makes this engine feel more muscular. Subjectively, the quoted 148bhp seems honest enough and propels the Forester to 60mph in 10.5 seconds, but it's a unit that needs to be revved quite vigorously to extract the best from it.

Truth is, most customers will still prefer the excellent boxer diesel engine, which is the first of its type. This 144bhp unit makes the Forester fractionally quicker than the petrol engine to 60mph and doesn't want for character. All Forester models have four-wheel drive but the systems differ depending on the specified transmission. The manual cars have a more conventional centre differential system with a viscous limited slip differential whereas the automatic models get an Active Torque Split AWD system. VDC stability control is standard on all models, coordinating the engine, transmission and brakes in order to recover the vehicle's position should extreme manoeuvres or slippery conditions push the Forester into a slide. The modified dampers do a good job of improving ride refinement and body roll is markedly reduced.

Although it might take the assistance of a Subaru dealer to draw your attention to it, the Forester has had a facelift. It's a subtle nip and tuck, the car acquiring a new and bolder front grille, revised mirrors and a new design of alloy wheel. Inside, the quality of the materials has been upgraded yet again - something of a Subaru obsession with the Forester. You could be forgiven for thinking that the interior must now trimmed like the Garrick Club, but the Japanese company's approach is more akin to Sergey Bubka's on record breaking - one tiny increment at a time. The result is that the interior now feels about average for the class if you don't pay too much attention to the plastic finishes. When it comes to the oily bits, however, J D Power's customer satisfaction surveys seem to indicate that the Subaru is better built than virtually any of its key rivals.

Where the Forester is still playing catch-up is in its space and overall packaging. This third generation model features a rising waistline and broad front end that have given it more of a generic compact 4x4 stance. In fact it's fully 110mm taller than the old estate models, 45mm wider and with another 90mm grafted into the wheelbase. This quite significant enlargement takes the Forester out of its old niche and repositions it among cars like the Toyota RAV4, the Honda CR-V, the Land Rover Freelander and the Nissan X-TRAIL - all of which have been honing their talents for quite some time.

With a price difference of around £2,000 between the improved petrol and the diesel engines, choosing your powerplant is no longer the cut and dried choice it once was. Whereas you would have needed to cover tiny mileages to make the petrol engine work for you, now the petrol models become a far more viable option.

Much of the engineering and equipment on the Forester positions it as one of the more advanced vehicles in its class. Safety is particularly important for family buyers and the Forester excels in impact absorption for both the vehicle occupants and pedestrians. The front seats get seatbelts with pretensioners and load limiters, the brake pedal is collapsible, all pillars feature impact absorbent materials and there are front, side and curtain airbags.

All models have electric windows, 60/40-split rear seats with reclining backrests, climate-controlled air-conditioning, a radio/CD player, front fog lamps, a vehicle information display, a height and reach-adjustable steering wheel, heated front seats, mirrors and windscreen wipers and cruise-control. Manual models feature a dual-range transmission while the XS variant gets slick luminescent dials.

A 40GB hard disk-based navigation system with audio capability is offered. This features 3D screen scrolling, rapid access rates and a 7-inch VGA screen with LED backlighting. The sound system uses Audyssey MultEQ3 technology that corrects in-car sound distortion and features a 7-speaker system with woofer.

SUBARU FORESTER ESTATE 2.0 X 5DR

I once took an old Forester XT for a 'brisk' drive around the local lanes and returned to find it had averaged 9mpg. This latest Forester improves on that rather significantly with a combined fuel figure of 37mpg for the petrol model. Go for the diesel and you'll get 44.8mpg and 167g/km of CO2. Not only does the Forester 2.0D lead its class when it comes to emissions (the worst you'll get is 170g/km) and fuel economy (39.2mpg around town and 48.7mpg on a run), it's also one of the cheapest to insure. Only the VW Tiguan can match the entry-level version's insurance rating and most rivals are much pricier at your brokers.

As always with Subaru, the warranty is one of the best in the industry, offering three year/60,000 mile cover plus three years' paintwork and 12 years' anti-corrosion cover. This is in addition to three years' free membership of Subaru Assistance - a comprehensive home and roadside repair and recovery package throughout the UK and Europe, administered by Mondial Assistance. Service intervals are 12,000 miles and residual values look firm, especially for the diesel model.

SUBARU FORESTER ESTATE 2.0 X 5DR

Although this third generation Forester doesn't have the big, rufty-tufty personality of its predecessors, few would argue that Subaru hasn't built an objectively better vehicle. The latest petrol engine is a good deal more efficient but it's somewhat overshadowed by a diesel engine that's a real talent. Drive the two back to back and even if they returned similar fuel economy and emissions figures, you'd still pick the diesel for the effortless flexibility afforded by its superior torque.

The facelift hasn't done too much to raise the profile of the Forester's rather unexceptional styling, but the interior gets a welcome if modest improvement in quality and the ride quality has improved in line with the fitment of some high-end dampers. Despite Subaru's most concerted efforts, the mainstream still hasn't caught onto the Forester and these revisions aren't about to change that. It's a class act but hey, let's keep it between ourselves.
